Investing in Cambodian teachers
This July, our team of twelve Australian educators and specialists provided professional development for nearly 90 teachers from 20 REECH-supported organisations across Cambodia. Topics included Educational Leadership, Primary Teaching, and Teaching Excellence.
This year, three young Khmer teachers also joined us as cultural advisors, helping to ensure the training was relevant and practical for Cambodian classrooms. It worked incredibly well—and is something we hope to build on in future years.
Into classrooms
Alongside the workshops, our early childhood team tried something new.
They visited five early learning centres in Phnom Penh, working directly with teachers who had identified children they find challenging. After observing the children and classrooms, the team provided practical strategies tailored to each situation.
The response from teachers was wonderful. They valued having someone listen to their concerns, observe what was actually happening in their classroom, and offer practical ideas they could use straight away.
Growing young women
Eighteen young Cambodian women also came together for our second Young Women in Leadership Seminar.
Building upon the first seminar in January, it was another opportunity to encourage emerging female leaders, build confidence and create connections between young women working across REECH-supported organisations.
On the sidelines
Sometimes a relatively small gift can make a very big difference.
While we were in Cambodia, REECH also:
- Purchased a sewing machine for a single mum, giving her a way to earn an income. We’re hoping to sell some of her products at our REECH Christmas Fair Trade Markets later this year.
- Provided two bicycles for the teenage children of another single mum, helping them continue travelling to school;
- Gifted 17 packs of period underwear to young teachers.
